Active land use in the Arctic region of Russia (including transport functions of sea passes) demand filling the the lack of knowledge about the most ecologically vulnerable zone - the coastal permafrost-affected marsh environments - has to be filled. Here all the negative effects of human impacts and possible hazards can hardly affect the coastal and lithoral biota. The situation in the studied region is also much complicated due to the wide zones of shallow waters, low river and sea banks that allow the sea waters penetrate the coastal zone deeply during the wind-driven floodings. These environments are nearly inaccessible due to the reasons above. This is why they are still very poorly studied and the soils hardly fit the modern classification systems. Project proposes the soil-geographical study of the marshes and low terraces of the coastal zones of the North Jakutia - Laptev and East-Siberian seas. The structure of the soil cover and properties of the soils will be studied according to the influence of the sea waters, permafrost dynamics, mineral and organic matter deposition etc. The taxonomical position of studied soils will be also specified. One of the aspects is the studying of the modern oil contamination of these environments and soils. The results of the study will allow forming the database for the possible remediation methodology.
